Officials say 1 killed, 2 hurt in apartment fire

PLAINFIELD, Ind. (AP) _ Officials say one person was killed by a fire at an apartment building for senior citizens in suburban Indianapolis.

The fire was reported about 7:30 a.m. Friday at the Mill Run Apartments in the western suburb of Plainfield. Firefighters helped several residents from the building, but Plainfield Fire Chief Brian Russell says the blaze was confined to one apartment on the third floor.

Two other people were taken to a hospital, but information about their injuries wasn't immediately released.

Russell says the person killed lived in the apartment where the blaze broke out.

Residents were evacuated from the building's second and third floors, with many staying in the first-floor lobby until their floors were deemed safe.

Russell says the fire doesn't appear suspicious, but the cause wasn't immediately known.
