Indiana to Appeal Ruling on Gay Couple’s Marriage

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ State attorneys say they'll appeal a federal judge's decision ordering Indiana to recognize one gay couple's out-of-state marriage.

U.S. District Judge Richard Young issued an injunction Thursday extending a previous order requiring the state to list Amy Sandler as the spouse of Niki Quasney after Quasney dies of cancer. It applies only to them, not to other gay couples who want Indiana recognition.

The attorney general's office issued a statement expressing its sympathy but says state law doesn't allow for hardship exceptions.

The agency says that it's notifying county clerks of the decision and informing them that they still are prohibited from issuing marriage licenses to other same-sex couples in Indiana.

Indiana doesn't recognize gay marriages, including those performed in other states.
