Indianapolis Black Leaders Call for Calm

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Black leaders in Indianapolis are calling for calm after a grand jury didn't indict a white police officer for fatally shooting an unarmed black teenager in Ferguson, Missouri.

Indiana Black Expo President Tanya Bell and Indianapolis Urban League President Tony Mason are among the community leaders who've scheduled a Wednesday news conference to respond to the grand jury decision that has sparked rioting in Ferguson.

Bell issued a statement late Monday saying the grand jury proceedings into the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown seemed unjust and part of the reason for many people lacking confidence in the judicial system. However, she called for peaceful protests.

A peaceful demonstration Tuesday evening in downtown Indianapolis drew about 150 people. A peace vigil is planned Wednesday evening in downtown South Bend.
