Man Wounded by NW Indiana Sheriff’s Deputy

RENSSELAER, Ind. (AP) –  State police say a northwestern Indiana sheriff's deputy shot and wounded a man during a confrontation.

State police Sgt. Ann Wojas says Jasper County officers were called about 11:50 p.m. Tuesday to a disturbance at a home in the northern part of the county. Wojas says they found a 39-year-old man being aggressive who first came outside with a large knife, then came out a second time carrying a rifle.

The deputies reported they ordered the man to drop the rifle, but he pointed it at an officer. That is when the deputy fired at the man, hitting him in the shoulder.

Wojas says the man was taken to a Gary hospital in stable condition. The officers weren't injured.
