Lawmakers Seek Rebuttal of Federal Overreach

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Roughly 100 state lawmakers from across the nation packed the Indiana Statehouse with the goal of curbing federal encroachment on state power.

Members of the Mount Vernon Assembly say they want to call a constitutional convention to rewrite the nation's bedrock document. The group met Thursday and plans to meet again Friday.

New Hampshire state Rep. Jordan Ulery said he hopes they can teach the public that it was the states that gave power to the federal government at the nation's founding and not the other way around.

Indiana Senate President Pro Tem David Long said he hopes the group's work will lay a strong foundation for a possible convention. But the political and practical hurdles of calling the first constitutional convention since 1787 seem incredibly high.
