Man Charged in Shooting of 2 in South Bend Apartment

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – Murder and attempted murder charges have been filed against a South Bend man accused of shooting to death fellow tenants of an apartment building.

Roy L. Walker was charged Monday in the fatal shooting Sunday of 43-year-old Michelle L. Blankenship and 46-year-old Robert J. Duke. Police say another man escaped injury when Walker's gun failed to fire.

Commander Tim Corbett of the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit said the motive in the attack was not clear. He refused to discuss the 49-year-old Walker's relationships with the victims, other than they knew each other and lived in the same building. Corbett added the shootings weren't random acts.

Court documents indicate Walker was arrested after he crashed Blankenship's auto. When arrested he was wearing only socks and a rope around his neck.
