No Charges Against Kokomo Officer in Fatal Shooting

KOKOMO, Ind. (AP) _ The Howard County prosecutor says no charges will be filed against a Kokomo police officer who fatally shot a 17-year-old girl inside a store last month.

The Kokomo Tribune reports Prosecutor Mark McCann found that Officer Roy Smith acted reasonably and in self-defense when he shot Shelly Haendiges inside a Casey's General Store on June 12. McCann says Smith responded with lethal force only when Haendiges aimed a weapon at him.

Smith was responding to a call that the convenience store was being robbed by a female with a handgun. It was later determined she had a pellet gun. She was shot twice.
