Northeast Indiana Battling Extreme Cold

NORTH WEBSTER, Ind. (WOWO): Dangerous cold is gripping northeast Indiana.

LaGrange County remains under a winter weather advisory until Thursday afternoon. With Lake Effect Snow, that region could get anywhere from 3 to 8 inches of snow.

National Weather Service forecasters have issued a wind chill warning, indexes could fall from -8 below to 28 below zero. The actual temperature will dip to the range of 5 to 14 degrees below.

High winds will also whip up snow creating blowing and drifting conditions.

Use extreme caution if you have to head out by bundling up and covering up. In conditions like this, any exposed skin can suffer frostbite in 15 minutes or less.

You are urged to check on babies and the elderly, they are especially at risk during the frigid cold.

Here are some keys to dealing with the cold:

*Dress in layers, with hats, gloves, scarves, thick socks and insulated boots. Those inner layers guard against water and wind.

*If you work outside, or spend any time outside take frequent breaks inside.

*If you are traveling, make sure you have proper emergency supplies and let friends and family know your travel plans.
