UPDATED: One Dead In Monday Night Shooting

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Late Monday night, officers with the Allen County Sheriff’s Department responded to a shooting in the 13700 block of Ledgestone Place, near the intersection of Illinois Road and Noyer Road.

Upon arrival, officers and medics located a man with critical injuries. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later. He was later identified by the Allen County Coroner’s Office as Timothy Leroy Coats, 29 of Fort Wayne. His cause of death was due to a gunshot wound to the head, and his manner of death was ruled a homicide.

Investigation indicated that the suspect and victim were at a residence attending a small gathering before the shooting occurred. The suspect fled before police arrived and was located nearly 3 hours later, south of Allen County.

The suspect was apprehended early Tuesday morning and has since been identified as Jerico Simmons. He was located in Grant County just before 3:00 A.M.  Simmons is being held at Allen County Jail on a parole violation.  This incident remains under investigation.
