Pence Joins School Choice Rally

<p>  INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Supporters of Indiana’s charter school and private school voucher programs are planning a Statehouse rally during which they’ll hear from Republican Gov. Mike Pence.

The noontime rally on Monday sponsored by School Choice Indiana and other groups comes as the Legislature is considering a proposal that would expand what is already the nation’s largest voucher program.

Legislative leaders and former Indiana Pacers star Jalen Rose are among the other scheduled speakers for the event.

Indiana is spending about $36 million on subsidies for low- and moderate-income families to send about 9,100 children to private schools this year. A bill already approved by the Indiana House this year would expand the program by allowing kindergartners and some other children to be eligible without first spending a year in public schools.
