PITTSBURGH (AP): The Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle supermarket chain is expanding into Indiana.

The chain says it has an agreement to build a GetGo convenience store and an upscale Market District grocery store in Carmel, Ind., a suburb of Indianapolis.

The chain, based in suburban O'Hara Township, has about 420 stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia and Ohio. They include full-size supermarkets, GetGo convenience stores, and a few smaller outlets including the Market District stores.

The Market District store will be the 10th for the chain. The other nine are in Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Both Indiana stores will be part of a development called The Bridges and are set to open next year.

Chief Executive Officer Laura Karet says the chain is “actively evaluating opportunities for additional locations.''
