LANSING, Mich. (AP): Michigan's top prison official is preparing to answer lawmakers' questions on the recent escape of a convicted killer.
 
State Corrections Department Director Dan Heyns will appear Thursday before a Senate subcommittee in Lansing. Legislators want to know how Michael Elliot got away from the Ionia Correctional Facility for 24 hours earlier this month.
 
Two prison employees have been suspended. Elliot broke through two fences without catching anyone's attention.
 
The state has said motion sensors should have triggered an alarm and a flashing light in the control tower, but they didn't go off or he wasn't detected. Elliot was wearing a white kitchen uniform to help him blend with snow.
 
The 40-year-old was arrested in northwestern Indiana. A request for Elliot's return to Michigan was sent Wednesday to Indiana's governor.
