INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Indiana Schools Superintendent Glenda Ritz is calling for “student-centered'' school improvements in her latest education speech.

Ritz also says in a video released Friday that communities need to be more engaged to help improve schools around the state. The video is the latest in Ritz's “State of the Classroom'' series.

She also says in the video that state leaders need to work with local schools to provide enough support.

Former Schools Superintendent Tony Bennett started the practice of delivering an annual “State of Education'' speech, similar to the governor's better known State of the State address. But Ritz dropped the practice last year.

Since defeating Bennett two years ago, Ritz has often scrapped with Statehouse Republicans, including many of Bennett's former supporters.
