DUGGER, Ind. (AP) _ The state has denied a shrinking Indiana school district's bid to live on as charter schools.
The Indiana Charter School Board voted Thursday to decline Dugger Union Community School Corporation's requested charter.
Residents of the town of fewer than 1,000 people about 30 miles southeast of Terre Haute requested the charter after the Northeast School Corporation voted to close Dugger's elementary and high schools in a budget-cutting move.
Charter School Board members say the application lacked necessary information due to the short time since it was proposed. The charter schools would have opened this fall.
A motion to grant Dugger a conditional charter died for lack of a second.
The charter school supporters can reapply later this year.
