WASHINGTON D.C. (WOWO): Indiana U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly has announced that he will back the proposed Iran nuclear agreement.

The U.S. and five other countries have been working in Vienna on a deal to curb Iran's nuclear programs in exchange for relief from economic sanctions.

Donnelly says in a statement that he is willing to give the “opportunity” for this agreement to succeed, saying that “a nuclear-armed Iran would pose an unacceptable threat” to the United States and its allies.

Democratic Senator Bob Menendez of New Jersey joined New York Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer in voicing the lone Democratic opposition to the bill so far.

Most Republicans, including Senator Dan Coats and Congressman Marlin Stutzman, say the deal is unacceptable because it still allows Iran to continue its nuclear enrichment program.
