United Way Releases Homeless Study

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The number of homeless people in the area is down.

Numbers released today by the United Way of Allen County show a decrease of 17 percent in Allen, Huntington, Noble and Whitley Counties. Researchers tallied 445 individuals in the five counties.

In January, the agency conducted a point in time count to determine trends and local need. Officials credit a rapid rehousing program.

They also think the harsh winter meant the homeless were given a few more options for shelter.

They also say the study shows there is room for improvement. Twenty nine percent of those impacted are younger than 18 and another 18 percent is made up of veterans.
