60th FWPD Academy Recruit Class to Graduate Friday

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The Fort Wayne Police Department will graduate its 60th basic recruit class Friday at 6:00 P.M. at the Public Safety Academy. The class started in February and has finished over 850 hours of classroom and practical instruction. Thirteen men and two women are still in the class out of an original 22 recruits. In June of last year, the Fort Wayne City Council approved a tax increased that let the department start recruiting. The department can staff 460 officers, but according to Public Information Officer Mike Joyner, because of a large number of retirements, the staff fell below that number. Public Safety Director Rusty York, Police Chief Garry Hamilton, Councilman Geoff Paddock, and Indiana Law Enforcement Academy Executive Director Rusty Goodpaster will speak at the ceremony.
