FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO):  Last month, the Allen County Council discussed extending the wheel tax beyond next year.  On Thursday, a unanimous vote in favor means it will continue until 2029.

According to meeting minutes from August, the motion was postponed, but a decision on whether or not to extend the wheel tax had to be made this month. During the September 15th meeting, the motion passed, according to 21 Alive.

The passing vote means that residents in Allen County who own a car will continue to pay $20 a year.

Councilman Bill Fishering pointed out in the August meeting that there’s flexibility to increase the tax if it’s not generating enough funds.  Factors like changing interest rates that could force an adjustment to raise the rate.  However he points out there’s not a way to reduce it, unless the bonds are paid off.
