Zika Virus confirmed in Defiance County

DEFIANCE, Ohio (WOWO): The Zika virus has made its way to Defiance.

The Defiance County Health Department says the county’s first case of the virus comes through a resident who visited a virus-infected country last month and returned home.

The virus is primarily spread by mosquitoes, but so far there haven’t been any cases of mosquitoes in Defiance County carrying the infection, according to County Health Commissioner Kimberly Moss.

The Zika virus can cause certain birth defects if a pregnant woman is infected, and can also be transmitted through sexual contact.
