FORT WAYNE, IND. (WOWO) Google announced Wednesday that its new Fort Wayne data center is now operational, marking a major milestone just one year after breaking ground. The company detailed a series of energy, water, and workforce initiatives ahead of a community forum scheduled for this evening.

The facility is now part of Google’s global data-center network that powers services such as Gemini, Gmail, Search, Maps, and Google Cloud. Indiana clients include the Indiana Department of Transportation.

Google Data Center Public Affairs Manager Broderick Green said the company aims to ensure the project benefits both its workforce and the surrounding community. “Google is focused on ensuring this project translates into career-defining, high-tech jobs and making the necessary investments that ensure a successful relationship with the Fort Wayne community,” Green said. “We are appreciative of the open dialogue with the community and Fort Wayne leadership.”

Energy Reliability and AI Infrastructure

Google outlined new coordination with Indiana Michigan Power to support grid stability. That includes a capacity commitment framework designed so large industrial users cover their power load without shifting costs to other consumers. The partnership also includes a demand-response program allowing Google to reduce electricity use from machine-learning workloads during peak times.

The campus is zoned for backup generators but Google says they would only be used during catastrophic outages or required testing. Daily operations will rely entirely on grid power supplied by Indiana Michigan Power.

Water and Ecosystem Investments

Google is contributing over $1.2 million to ACRES Land Trust to permanently conserve 22 acres of wetlands in the Saint Joseph River watershed. The preserved land is expected to naturally recharge approximately 500 million gallons of groundwater annually, strengthening long-term water resilience in the region.

“This contribution allows ACRES to permanently protect a vital tract of land in the Saint Joseph River area,” said ACRES Executive Director Jason Kissel. “By securing this land forever, we are ensuring a long-term, natural source of clean water for our region.”

Google is also funding water-infrastructure improvements for its campus — including new pipelines and storage tanks — which will be turned over to Fort Wayne City Utilities as permanent public assets.

Support for Local Schools and Workforce Development

Google reported it has contributed more than $175,000 this year to East Allen County Schools and Fort Wayne Community Schools. Investments have expanded STEM programming, added classroom resources, and strengthened career and technical education.

“Google Data Center has been a tremendous partner to East Allen County Schools,” said Superintendent Marilyn Hissong. “Their support has strengthened STEM opportunities for our junior high students, expanded resources for the East Allen Educational Foundation, and enhanced our Career and Technical Education programming.”

Statewide, Google also funded the electrical training ALLIANCE for three Indiana apprenticeship partners — including the Fort Wayne Electrical JATC — and partnered with Ivy Tech to host a 100-student IT skills challenge with Google-funded scholarships. A recent partnership with the Allen County Public Library will enhance the Rolland Center for Lincoln Research’s immersive projection experience.
