An 18-year-old man sentenced as an adult for murder when he was just 12 will see freedom.
In a Warsaw courtroom Friday, Paul Gingerich was ordered to serve 300 days in adult prison, a year in a re-entry program, and then home detention in Allen County for the rest of his 20 year sentence, according to the Indy Star.
Gingerich was believed to be the youngest person in Indiana to be sentenced as an adult. That sparked an outcry that led to “Paul’s Law,” which allows alternative sentences for juveniles who commit serious crimes.
Gingerich helped shoot and kill then-15-year-old Colt Lundy’s stepfather in 2010. Both he and Lundy were sentenced to 30 years in prison as adults. However, both went to juvenile detention centers to serve their time at first.
In court, Gingerich said he “will never stop being sorry and that sorry will never be enough” for killing Lundy’s stepfather, according to the Indy Star.
