INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Firefighters have rescued six passengers who were stranded for almost two hours in gondolas suspended some 35 feet above an orangutan exhibit at the Indianapolis Zoo.
Zoo spokeswoman Judy Palermo says the ride stopped around 5 p.m. Sunday. Palermo says the ride operators were able to recover all but six of the passengers. The zoo called the city fire department to help retrieve the rest.
Indianapolis Fire Department Captain Rita Reith says in a news release that firefighters secured each rider in a harness and lowered them to the ground in a lift basket.
Reith says the rescued passengers included two girls, aged 10 and 8, and that all rescued passengers were in good spirits.
She says firefighters had completed training to deal with this situation just three weeks ago.
