AUBURN, Ind. (WOWO) — An Indiana State Police trooper helped deliver a newborn along I-69 early Sunday morning after stopping a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed.

Trooper Sam Waterhouse was patrolling near the 328-mile marker outside Auburn when he saw the vehicle heading southbound at an extremely high speed. He caught up to the vehicle and stopped it a few miles south.

The driver told Waterhouse that his wife was in active labor and the baby was coming immediately.

Waterhouse grabbed his medical kit and went to the vehicle, where the father was already delivering the baby.

The trooper noticed the umbilical cord was wrapped around the newborn’s neck. He quickly and carefully unwrapped the cord, and moments later, the baby began crying and breathing independently.

Waterhouse wrapped the newborn in a blanket and placed the baby in the mother’s arms as a Parkview Emergency Medical team arrived.

Medics evaluated both the mother and baby and found them to be healthy. They were then taken to a nearby birth center for additional care.

Indiana State Police are withholding the family’s names and asking for privacy following the traumatic incident.

ISP says Waterhouse’s quick actions and composure demonstrate the readiness and dedication of its troopers.
