HUNTINGTON, Ind. (WOWO): The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive in honor of a 3-year-old Huntington boy fighting cancer. The drive will take place Saturday, July 26th, in Wyatt Schmaltz's honor. Wyatt is battling stage 4 neuroblastoma, a type of cancer that starts in young nerve cells.

Each day in the U.S., patients need an average of 44,0000 units of blood, which equals about 17 million donations transfused to 5 million patients a year.

In a release sent by the Red Cross, Wyatt's father Joseph Schmaltz says,

“Wyatt is strong and he’s a hero to many of us for fighting so hard…Wyatt has received several blood transfusions and will continue to receive them.”

The drive will take place at Life Church on East State Street in Huntington from 11:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. Donors are asked to schedule a donation appointment at redcrossblood.org or 1-800-RED CROSS.
