Residents Support Raising Chickens Within City Limits

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A group of people showed their support on Tuesday toward an ordinance that would allow residents to raise chickens within city limits.

According to the Journal Gazette, Michele Berkes-Adams is the originator of the proposal, who said supporters are in favor of letting Fort Wayne residents raise their own hens for various reasons.

Berkes-Adams told the Journal Gazette there are environmental and health benefits to raising chickens on your property. She said the chickens recycle food and their manure can be use as compost or fertilizer.

She added that small-flock eggs tend to be more nutritious than factory-farmed eggs, and having control of your food ensures the community can endure market fluctuations or other emergencies.
