HUNTINGTON, Ind. (WOWO): Three late night tubers swept away in the swift currents of the Wabash River are safe after rescue efforts.
Around 9:20 p.m., Conservation Officers from three counties were called to the Wabash River near Huntington on an emergency call that three people were involved in a tubing accident. The call was made from 24 year old Jerrika Huffman, one of the victims that made her way to safety. When help arrived, 21 year old Nathan Wright and 29 year old Joni Wininger were clinging to branches.
The Huntington City Fire Department used a rescue boat to reach the Wright and Wininger and were able to bring them to land safely. None of the victims had personal flotation devices, and all three were ticket for the omission.
Investigating officer Jerry Hoerdt stated “All three are lucky to be alive and we can not stress enough to wear your life jackets when on or near the water.”
Departments assisting at the scene were the Huntington County Sheriffs Department, Mount Etna Fire Department, Andrews Fire Department, and the Huntington County Technical Rescue team, as well as Conservation Officers from Wabash, Grant, and Kosciusko counties.
