EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) – The Evansville City Council opposes adding a definition of marriage to the Indiana Constitution.
 
The Evansville Courier & Press reports City Council members in the state's third-largest city voted 9-0 Monday for a resolution stating its opposition to the constitutional ban on gay marriage. The resolution will be given to the General Assembly.
 
Mayor Lloyd Winnecke wrote southwestern Indiana lawmakers last week saying he believes the amendment is unnecessarily divisive.
 
If approved by state lawmakers, Indiana voters would then vote on the proposal.
 
The council's resolution states that “discrimination in any form adversely impacts the ability of industry to attract the best employees” and the council's obligation is to promote economic development and to insure that industry is not discouraged from doing business in Evansville.
