LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) _ Several community events will go on as planned this summer in downtown Lafayette since repair work is being delayed on the large pedestrian bridge over the Wabash River.
The state transportation department will seek new bids after initial bids exceeded the $3 million cost estimate and the contractor selected from this month's bidding fails to meet financial qualifications.
The Journal & Courier reports work on the John T. Myers Pedestrian Bridge between Lafayette and West Lafayette includes repairs to the bridge joints and protecting the piers from floodwaters.
The project would have significantly limited public access for the June 21 Taste of Tippecanoe and the July 4 Stars & Stripes Celebration.
City Engineer Jenny Leshney says work could start by September but will likely extend into next year.
