INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Indiana education leaders are inching closer to approving a new system for grading the state's schools.
Members of the State Board of Education and a school grade review panel met Wednesday to discuss how the new “A-F'' school grades would be determined.
At the center of the debate is how changes in student test scores _ known as “student growth'' _ is used in deciding a school's overall grade.
Lawmakers requested a new system in 2013, following extensive confusion and complaints about the system put in place by former state schools superintendent Tony Bennett.
The “A-F'' review panel was formed to craft a new system after The Associated Press published emails showing Bennett and his staff had secretly overhauled the school grading formula to benefit a campaign donor's charter school.
