Shootings Injure South Bend College Student, Youth

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – A South Bend City councilman says shootings that injured a Holy Cross College student and a juvenile are part of a pattern of violence against all college students on the city's north side.

Councilman Fred Ferlic tells the South Bend Tribune the city and the University of Notre Dame have talked about public safety and increasing police protection the area that also includes Holy Cross and St. Mary's College.

Police say the 23-year-old student and the juvenile were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries following the shooting early Sunday. Police say they're still trying to determine what prompted the shootings.

Ferlic, who's also an orthopedic surgeon, treated both shooting victims. He says the student's head wound came within about half an inch on leaving him “a vegetable.''
