NEW CASTLE, Ind. (AP) _ A teenager has been ordered to pay $12,000 in restitution for damaging headstones dating from the 1800s in an eastern Indiana town cemetery.
A Henry County judge on Monday also put 18-year-old Jansen Smith of New Castle on probation for about 18 months and ordered community service time for the damage done in late July to 27 headstones in the Lewisville Cemetery. Smith pleaded guilty last month to a felony charge of criminal mischief.
Cemetery board member Tom Saunders tells The Star Press all the damaged headstones were from the 19th century, with one marking the grave town founder Lewis Freeman.
An 18-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to charges that he took part in the cemetery damage.
