JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (AP) _ A southern Indiana prosecutor intends to seek the death penalty against a man who confessed to police that he fatally stabbed his girlfriend and then mutilated her body, including cooking and eating some of her organs.
The Louisville, Kentucky Courier-Journal reported Tuesday that Clark County Prosecutor Steve Stewart has filed his intent to seek the death penalty for Joseph Oberhansley.
The 33-year-old Oberhansley is charged with murder and abuse of a corpse after he allegedly fatally stabbed 46-year-old Tammy Jo Blanton on Sept. 11, then mutilated her and ate parts of the Jeffersonville woman's body.
Authorities say Oberhansley was convicted of manslaughter in the 1998 shooting death of his then-girlfriend, 17-year-old Sabrina Elder, in suburban Salt Lake City just days after the birth of their son.
