2nd Indy Government Officials Charged with Embezzlement

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Federal prosecutors have charged a local government official in Indianapolis with embezzling tens of thousands of dollars in Social Security payments intended for disabled and elderly recipients.

Prosecutors said Friday that 32-year-old Carmen Batts-Porter of Indianapolis embezzled nearly $67,000 from 2010 to 2014. Batts-Porter served as a representative payee for the Center Township Trustee's office and was responsible for administering payments to Social Security recipients who couldn't manage their own money.

This is the second time in six months a Center Township Trustee Office employee has been charged in federal court. In July, the township's former chief financial officer was charged with embezzling nearly $344,000 in Social Security funds.

The Associated Press left a telephone message seeking comment from Batts-Porter's attorney.
