LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP): Lafayette police could soon dust off the city's false-alarm ordinance and start fining repeat offenders.

Police Lt. Brian Gossard says 99.5 percent of calls from automated security systems last year were false alarms. Officers received more than 3,400 calls from such systems.

Gossard tells the Journal & Courier that the department plans to work with home and business owners to avoid false alarms due to technical problems, wind, debris or user error. But after that, he says the department could begin enforcing an ordinance that dates back to the mid-1980s.

Under the ordinance, fines begin after multiple warnings. They would start at $25 and go up to $200,
