10-Digit Dialing for 812 Area Code Starts Today

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP): The Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor is reminding residents in southern Indiana they'll now have to dial an area code when making calls to local numbers.

All residential and business consumers need to dial 10-digit telephone number on calls to the 812 area code. The change will affect calls made to the southern third of the state, including to Evansville New Albany and Terre Haute. It's being made in preparation of the new 930 area code that will be overlaid throughout the same area currently using the 812 area code.

Reports say the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission ordered an area code overlay for the 812 region in July 2013.

New telephone lines and services may be assigned numbers with the new 930 area code.
