INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – A group of elementary school students has raised money to help cover the medical expenses of a sick police horse in Indianapolis.

WRTV-TV (http://bit.ly/1I3176G ) reports the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Mounted Patrol received $200 from children at Christel House Academy West on the school's playground Thursday morning. The news station says students did extra household chores and odd jobs to raise the money.

Jake, a 13-year-old patrol horse with skin cancer, had surgery at Purdue University in February.

Many of the students know Jake from visits to the horse barn, which is located near the school.
