Deal Calls for Special Study of ISTEP Exam’s Future

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): Indiana legislators have decided to put on hold a proposal that would scrap the state's ISTEP standardized test for students.

Some senators had pushed a bill calling for replacement of the exam with an “off-the-shelf'' test in hopes of saving millions of dollars. But House members favored keeping ISTEP in place while undertaking a special review of a possible overhaul.

Bill sponsor Sen. Ryan Mishler of Bremen said Thursday that an agreement with House members has the issue being assigned to a review committee.

The ISTEP exam has faced complaints about students experiencing problems with online connections from the testing vendor. There was an outcry in February over a jump in the length of testing time while worries grew over contract costs with exam vendors.
