WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) _ Purdue University President Mitch Daniels has been appointed one of three leaders of the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.

Daniels, a former Republican Indiana governor who left office in 2013, will serve as a co-chair of the committee, alongside former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta and former U.S. Rep. Tim Penny, a Minnesota Democrat.

The group, based out of Washington D.C., bills itself as a bipartisan nonprofit committed to educating the public about issues that have a fiscal impact.

Daniels said in a press release that the debt the nation takes on today sets up future generations for economic trouble. He was a budget director for former President George W. Bush.
