INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Indiana Gov. Mike Pence is scheduled to have outpatient surgery Friday to repair a hernia.

Pence's office said in a statement Thursday that the first-term Republican governor will undergo the surgery Friday morning at St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital. He's expected to be released from the hospital the same day and recover at home.

Pence's spokeswoman Kara Brooks says the governor does not know how he developed the hernia.

Former Gov. Mitch Daniels underwent surgery to repair a rotator cuff in his right shoulder in 2011. At the time, Daniels temporarily transferred his duties to then-Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman.

Pence's office says executive authority will be temporarily transferred Friday to Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann in much the same way.
