Repairs to Keep I-65 Bridge Closed until Mid-September

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP): State highway officials say an Interstate 65 bridge near Lafayette is expected to remain closed until mid-September.

The agency announced Friday a plan for repairs to fix the sinking of a pier for the bridge over Wildcat Creek.

That sinking led to an emergency closure of the bridge for northbound traffic, leading to a long detour for drivers to get around Lafayette and back on the highway.

State highway Commissioner Brandye Hendrickson says the agency is confident the sinking is related to work by a contractor widening I-65 in the area.

The agency says pile-driving work pierced disrupted an underground water feature, causing part of the bridge pier to tilt several inches.
