Lawsuit Alleges Excessive Force in Indiana Man’s Death

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Attorneys for the estate of a man fatally shot when an Indianapolis police officer and a security guard opened fire on him claim in a federal lawsuit he was unarmed at the time.

The lawsuit filed Thursday on behalf of Donte Sowell's estate names the city of Indianapolis and several other defendants.

Police have said an officer and a security guard opened fire on the 27-year-old Sowell in January after he fled a traffic stop and began shooting at a pursuing officer.

The suit alleges excessive force and conspiracy to deprive Sowell of his constitutional rights. It contends he “was unarmed and posed no threat to anyone'' when he was shot.

Attorney Ruth Brown says the plaintiffs have “multiple witnesses'' who say Sowell wasn't armed.
