Rapist Sentenced to 48+ Years in Prison

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A 27-year-old Fort Wayne man will spend more than 48 years in prison.

Lavonte Wilderness was sentenced in Allen County Superior Court Thursday. He was convicted last month of an August 2014 rape and assault on a woman after carjacking her at a bus station.

The Journal Gazette reports that Wilderness asked for leniency from the judge, citing his time volunteering at a local soup kitchen and food bank, but also said the victim had what he called “plenty of opportunities” to escape.

He gets 40 years for rape, 6 years for criminal confinement, and 2-and-a-half years for trying to strangle the woman.
