INDIANAPOLIS (AP): The Indiana Medical Licensing Board has extended the suspension of a Fort Wayne doctor who originally faced a felony drug charge in connection with prescriptions for addictive pain killers.

The panel acted Thursday on the suspension of anesthesiologist Dr. Michael Cozzi. It initially suspended the anesthesiologist’s license in March over questionable prescribing practices for pain medication. Criminal charges were later dropped.

Deputy Attorney General Jessica Krug tells The Journal Gazette Cozzi has changed attorneys and his new lawyer needs time to prepare before a full disciplinary hearing.

Cozzi operated the Fort Wayne Interventional Pain Management Clinic. He issued the most prescriptions for controlled substances in the state two years in a row to 1,700 different people. The prescriptions include 2 million dosage units of oxycodone and 1.2 million dosage units of hydrocodone.
