FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A contest between Fort Wayne’s fire stations has led to some big savings for the city.

The Fort Wayne Fire Department started a contest between its 18 stations back in January to see who could conserve the most energy, ranging from making sure to turn off the lights in empty rooms to hanging clothes to dry instead of using a dryer.

21Alive reports that so far, they’ve saved a little over $24,800 in utility bills.

Deputy Chief Adam O’Connor says the winning station gets a prize, but the other benefit is that the savings will go toward paying for some new equipment and paramedics getting added to the staff.
