ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO): The election is well underway and voters have already started to cast their ballots for the three candidates for Allen County Council.

One of those candidates was Councilman Roy Buskirk. He passed away Friday after a battle with cancer. He was 72.

So now the question remains, how will his passing affect the ballot? Chairman of the Allen County Republican Party Steve Shine tells WOWO News it’s too late for the Allen County Election board to change the ballot.

“… it (the Allen County Election Board) is not required to do anything to change the ballot within five days of the election, so what will happen if the three republicans win, including Roy? The Allen County Election Board is required to certify the three highest vote getters in that race,” Shine said.

“Then the Allen County Republican party will have a caucus to not only fill Roy’s remaining term, but if he is successful in winning the election tomorrow,  the Allen County Republican Party precinct committee…. would select his replacement for the four year term,” Shine said.

Shine went on to say that Councilman Buskirk was a well-respected community leader and will be deeply missed.

In honor of Councilman Buskirk, flags at all county buildings will be lowered to half-staff on Monday, Nov. 7.
