NATIONWIDE, (WOWO) — General Motors and subsidiary OnStar have been banned for five years from sharing the precise geolocation and driving behavior data with any consumer reporting agencies.
The FTC says that GM’s selling of the data, sometimes once every few seconds, amounted to unchecked surveillance.
Officials also said that GM’s enrollment process was unclear which led to consumers disclosing private aspects of their daily lives without actually knowing it.
The data could be used to determine insurance rates among other uses.
Under the settlement – GM must be more transparent with consumers and give them greater control over how their vehicle data is collected and used.
