AAA Projects Hoosier Holiday Travel Surge

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. (WOWO) AAA Indiana projects that nearly three million residents will be on the move during the 2025 year-end holiday season. From December 20 through January 1, approximately 2.9 million Hoosiers are expected to travel at least 50 miles, a 3.3% increase compared to last year.

The data signals one of the heaviest travel periods of the year in Indiana, as families head to celebrate Christmas, New Year’s, and other seasonal gatherings. AAA encourages drivers to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and monitor weather conditions to ensure safe trips.

This uptick reflects both growing confidence in holiday travel and a continued rebound in post-pandemic travel patterns. AAA says drivers should expect busier highways, particularly near major cities and popular destinations.

“With nearly three million people on the move, it’s critical to prepare for heavier traffic and winter road conditions,” AAA Indiana noted in its year-end travel forecast.

Travelers are advised to check road conditions, maintain vehicles, and plan routes in advance to avoid delays during the peak travel period.
