FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) — An Air Quality Action Day (AQAD) has been issued for all Indiana counties on Thursday as weather conditions are expected to contribute to elevated ozone pollution levels across the state.
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) announced that the alert will remain in effect for at least the next 24 hours. Officials cited dry, sunny conditions that are creating an environment favorable for the formation of ground-level ozone, a pollutant that can pose health risks to sensitive groups.
Children, older adults, and individuals with asthma, chronic lung disease, or other respiratory conditions are especially vulnerable to the effects of increased ozone levels. Health officials recommend limiting prolonged or strenuous outdoor activities during the afternoon and evening hours when ozone concentrations are typically at their highest.
Residents are also encouraged to take precautions against the sun while spending time outdoors. The same sunny conditions contributing to higher ozone levels can increase the risk of sunburn and heat-related illnesses. Applying sunscreen and reapplying it throughout the day is recommended, along with staying hydrated and seeking shade when possible.
The agency will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates as needed.
