Allen County Councilors Pass Tax Increase to Fund New Jail

ALLEN COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO) – Our partners in news at 21Alive report that Allen County Council members voted on Thursday to increase the county’s income tax rate by .11% to help fund the construction of a new jail.

During the meeting, councilors first voted 5-2 to reconsider a motion that would increase the local income tax (LIT) by .12%. In a second vote to raise the LIT by .11%, councilors passed the measure 4-3. They say they were able to decrease that number by using revenue from other funds.

The Allen County Board of Commissioners submitted a letter to Allen County Councilors on Tuesday, requesting that councilors impose a .15% LIT increase, down from their originally proposed .20% hike.

They say following several discussions with both constituents and councilors, they want to ensure they are not overtaxing residents while also securing enough funds so they wouldn’t have to raise rates again.

President Tom Harris says the vote allows them to move forward with the more than $316 million project. The county closed on the purchase of 140 acres of land on Meyer Road to construct the new jail back in April.

ALL Politicians are BIG GOVERNMENT October 26, 2023 at 1:52 pm

So, a Government Judge makes a ruling that the Government doesn’t fight, and the Government’s solution is to Raise taxes on all us?

I already pay 20% of MY INCOME to the Government, and the Government keep voting to TAKE MORE OF MY INCOME….To Provide better accommodations FOR CRIMINALS!!!!!

How much does MY GOVERNMENT give away of MY TAX dollars to PRIVATE COMPANIES…….or Public/Private Partnerships????…LET THEM PAY FOR THE JAIL!!!!

The State currently has a study on the idea of getting rid of Income taxes…..What will you local Government do with my taxes if the State actually eliminate State Taxes????…..Increase Local taxes by the State Amount? …GTH…
