Allen County to Settle Inmate Lawsuit

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Allen County will be paying a big bill next week.

The County Council is expected to approve payment of a nearly $638,000 settlement with a number of people who didn't get timely court hearings while being held in the Allen County Jail.

That's according to a report by the News-Sentinel that says it's related to a lawsuit filed in 2010 by a total of 962 inmates who had to wait longer than 48 hours for court dates after their initial arrests. County Attorney John Feighner told the News-Sentinel the bill could actually have been at lot worse if the case had gone to trial, to the tune of up to a million dollars per inmate, as opposed to one lump sum distributed among many.
